The Museum is in the old cotton factory of Cal Boyer or Vapor Nou, built in 1897 (the old unit) and in 1910-1920 (the new unit). The complex comprises two parallel two-storey units crowned by roof trusses, and it is a very typical example of the cotton textile industry. The large, fired brick chimney is outstanding as it majestically presides over the whole complex. It is protected as a Local Site of Cultural Interest.

The factory, owned by Joan Boyer i Ferrer, closed in 1978-79, and in 1981 Igualada City Council bought the building to install the regional museum.

The current Leather Museum of Igualada and Regional Museum of Anoia is a part of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC) and belongs to the Network of Local Museums of the Provincial Council of Barcelona. Over the years it has become a platform for the promotion of the cultural and industrial heritage of the city and leads many revitalization, research and dissemination initiatives. Its installations house the CECI (Centre for Regional Studies of Igualada), the offices of La Mostra performing arts fair for children and young audiences, and the “Casa de La Festa” [the Festival House] where the popular imagery of the city is brought together.
