Cal Segall is the oldest tannery that is preserved. Together with the Cal Granotes tannery -which are very close to each other, they are the only two documented as having been built during the 18th century.

Baixada de la Unió, 11 / c. del Rec, 35

  • 18th century

The building comprises the combination of an older part, formed by two tanneries separated by a patio, with a more modern part. Today, the entire complex (Cal Segall and Cal Valls) forms a single industrial unit. The older part is in the west, where the original structure of arches and vaults on the ground floor is preserved. This is where the pits for tanning the hides were located. The patio that separated the two oldest tanneries was covered. On the ground floor of the second tannery, continuing to the east, there were the remains of a bark-grinding mill, as its base was preserved. Below these remains, on a lower level and basement, there is a circular room with a semi-spherical roof that could have been an ice pit.

It currently houses “Espais del Rec”, a co-working space for design and creation initiatives.
